Maddocks Farm Organics has closed and we are reopening from late May 2023 as The Edible Flower Garden. Our new incarnation is much smaller and much more focused on teaching and sharing knowledge about organic growing. We will still offer very limited boxes of edible flowers to order in advance for summer. See below for some treats.

Our new home is a less than 1/2 acre garden so we have reluctantly had to give up our commercial organic certification and Maddocks Farm Organics name of 20 years (It is illegal to refer to yourself as organic if you don’t have certification). The Edible Flower Garden as we are now known will continue to follow all the organic principles and regulations for which we have won numerous Awards and will be offering limited naturally grown edible flower packs between the end of May and October 2023. In addition we will be passing on our skills to others to develop wildlife friendly gardens, brimming with edible flowers and sustainable produce.

Keep an eye on the website or sign up to our newsletter for further information.

Part of a christening selection for a complete cutie who collected them herself! 🤗🥰 #edible_flowers
Cosmos sulphureus are technically acknowledged as the only edible cosmos (U.K) although many growers here and abroad grow it’s more flamboyant and exotic cousin Cosmos bipinnatus. I’m happy with sulphureus though. It copes so well with the more turbulent weather we are being thrown without being damaged and the flowers fit neatly in a punnet. Oh and did I mention that the bees love it! 🤗🐝🤗🐝🤗🐝

Which is your favourite?

When you take a dahlia cutting you know what you’re getting but when you save seed the world’s your oyster! All these from the seed of one little promiscuous dahlia! 🤗#seedsaving #growyourown #rainbowdahlias #edibleflowers #maddocksfarmorganics #theedibleflowergarden
Back in my natural habitat! 😂 Butterflies and moths ( as most other insects) are really struggling! Please, please take time to do @savebutterflies Big Butterfly Count. Recording the lack of insects is vital to persuade our new government to put the planet and wildlife first and ban harmful chemicals. #bigbutterflycount
Know your babies! These beauties will pupate (much like a butterfly) and then emerge as 7 spotted Ladybirds! In both forms they pretty much spend their time chomping on aphids so give them a lot of love! Ladybirds love to breed on nettles, daisies and in my experience Swiss chard which is a little random. 🤗

Custodian of the last 24 of these to be sold in the U.K. by @david_austin_roses. Now a ‘retired’ variety. My all time favourite though so they are much loved and get better care than Long Suffering Stu or my children! 😂 #retiredroses #munsteadwood #davidaustinroses #theedibleflowergarden formerly #maddocksfarmorganics.

Loving seeing this in the middle of the marquee at #rhschelsea. 🙌🙌🙌Also love the emphasis on edibles within planting schemes or as stand alone planters. Keeping it real. Gardening starts from the soil up. #feedthesoil #makingcompost #organicgardening
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I’ve emptied the pantry 😂and will keep you posted on Diablo’s 🐦‍⬛ reaction to garlic granules, coffee and chilli powder!
Anyone got any solutions to over zealous blackbirds. Diablo and his wife are literally trashing everything I plant. I’ve tried the following:

1) Not watering in the evening after I’ve planted stuff so there are no nice damp places to dig;

2) Making sure any manure is really buried and only firm top soil is on top;

3) Digging over the compost heap and spreading wormy manure where I am NOT planting to give them something to eat elsewhere;

4) Potting on plant babies till they are bigger and planting out then;

5) Singing about the pie I’m going to make with him, his wife and 22 of their mates!

Any suggestions. In this heat it’s exhausting and I’m loosing a lot of babies being dug up and tossed on the paths. I’m covering where I can but he is really tenacious.

I need your help! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Bit of sunshine and everything starts to pop with colour. Weirdly every outside seems very dry considering it’s rained for the last 5 months! The wind is so drying. Not to worry. Another week of rain starting tomorrow. 😂#edibleflowers #maddocksfarmorganics now #theedibleflowergarden Have a good week all! Xx
